Maize

The cultivation of maize in Mauritius dates back to the first decades of colonization. About half of the maize produced in Mauritius is grown in sugarcane interrows, and the other half is grown in rotation with cane.

Maize is a leafy stalk whose kernels have seeds inside. It is an angiosperm, which means that its seeds are enclosed inside a fruit or shell and is important for its carbohydrate, proteins, iron, vitamin B, and minerals. Centuries of cross breeding have produced larger plants, and specialized varieties.
